Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has called for significant reforms within the country’s professional football league, Liga 1, to bolster its chances of successfully co-hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The President directed PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir to prioritize improvements in league organization and quality. This directive follows concerns regarding the league’s infrastructure, management, and overall competitiveness. Subianto emphasized the need for a professional and well-structured league to meet FIFA’s standards and attract investment. Thohir has acknowledged the challenges and pledged to implement necessary changes, including improvements to stadiums and refereeing. The push for reform aims to demonstrate Indonesia’s readiness to host a major international sporting event and elevate the nation’s football standards. The joint bid with other Asian nations is currently under consideration by FIFA.
