Indonesia’s Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) has officially replaced the term “pelaku” (actor) with “pengusaha” (entrepreneur) when referring to individuals involved in the sector. The change aims to shed negative connotations previously associated with the word “pelaku,” which officials believe didn’t fully capture the proactive and business-oriented nature of MSME participants. This rebranding effort seeks to elevate the perception of MSME owners and recognize their crucial role in the Indonesian economy. Ministry officials stated the new terminology better reflects the dynamic and innovative spirit of these business owners. The shift is intended to foster a more positive image and encourage greater participation in the MSME sector. This adjustment aligns with the government’s broader strategy to strengthen and empower local entrepreneurs.
