Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan/OJK) is requesting online lending platforms (pindar) to enhance their creditworthiness analysis. This move aims to prevent the practice of “gali lubang tutup lubang” – a colloquial term for using new loans to pay off existing ones – which leads to a cycle of debt for borrowers. The OJK is concerned about consumers becoming trapped in unsustainable debt situations due to inadequate assessment of their ability to repay. By strengthening lending criteria, the regulator hopes to protect citizens from predatory lending practices and promote financial stability. The increased scrutiny will focus on ensuring borrowers have a genuine capacity to manage their financial obligations before granting them loans. This action demonstrates the OJK's commitment to responsible lending within the rapidly growing online loan market in Indonesia.
