Indonesian lawmakers are calling for the deployment of newly acquired modern fishing vessels to specifically target illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities. Member of Commission IV of the House of Representatives, Rokhmin Dahuri, emphasized the need to strengthen efforts against IUU fishing. The request comes as Indonesia continues to grapple with significant losses due to illegal fishing in its waters. The move aims to enhance maritime security and protect the nation’s fisheries resources. Officials believe modern vessels equipped with advanced technology will be crucial in monitoring and intercepting illegal fishing operations. This initiative represents a proactive step towards safeguarding Indonesia’s marine ecosystem and economic interests. The government has yet to respond to the parliamentary request.
