A community group in Dharmasraya Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia, is successfully converting plastic waste into diesel fuel. The Gaharu Empowerment Center Nagari Sungai Duo initiative addresses both waste management issues and energy needs locally. Utilizing a pyrolysis process, the group processes various types of plastic that would otherwise end up in landfills or polluting the environment. The resulting diesel fuel is reportedly suitable for use in generators and engines. This innovative approach provides a sustainable solution for plastic disposal while creating a valuable resource. The project aims to empower the local community and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, offering a model for similar initiatives elsewhere in Indonesia and beyond. Initial production capacity is still modest, but expansion is planned based on demand and funding.
