Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is planning the development of 200 “Red and White Fishermen’s Villages” in the Papua province. This initiative aims to bolster the local fishing industry and improve the welfare of coastal communities. These villages will integrate housing, fishing infrastructure, and processing facilities to create self-sufficient fisheries hubs. The KKP hopes this project will reduce reliance on external sources for fish and enhance food security in the region. Furthermore, the villages are intended to strengthen Indonesia’s sovereignty over its maritime territory. The project also seeks to empower local fishermen through skills training and access to modern fishing technologies. Development is expected to stimulate economic growth and provide sustainable livelihoods for Papuan residents.
