Indonesia’s Agriculture Minister, Andi Amran Sulaiman, has identified palm oil downstreaming as crucial for significantly increasing the nation’s export revenue. He described the process as a “strategic weapon,” emphasizing its potential to move Indonesia up the value chain. This strategy involves processing crude palm oil (CPO) into higher-value products domestically, rather than exporting the raw material. Minister Sulaiman highlighted the positive impact on job creation and economic growth resulting from increased domestic processing facilities. The government is actively encouraging investment in downstream industries to capitalize on global demand for refined palm oil products. Successfully implementing downstreaming policies is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s trade balance and reduce reliance on raw commodity exports.
