Indonesia has been re-elected to the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, marking its return after a 12-year absence. The election took place during the 20th session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the 2003 Convention concerning the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Paris. Indonesia received 113 votes, securing one of the six seats allocated to the Asia and Pacific Group. This position will allow Indonesia to actively participate in determining which cultural traditions globally receive UNESCO protection and funding. The country previously served on the committee from 2008 to 2011. Indonesia’s return is seen as a significant opportunity to promote its own rich cultural heritage and contribute to international efforts in preserving intangible cultural heritage worldwide. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology expressed optimism about the role, highlighting Indonesia’s commitment to cultural preservation.
