India’s central cabinet has approved a national offshore exploration project, named ‘Samudra Manthan’ (Ocean churning), to boost domestic oil and gas production. The project, approved on Friday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will cost ₹84,884 crore (approximately $1 billion USD). It aims to enhance energy security amid global fuel crises exacerbated by geopolitical tensions. The initiative will focus on exploring hydrocarbon resources in India’s offshore areas. The project is slated for completion by the 2030-31 fiscal year. This approval signifies India’s commitment to reducing reliance on imported energy sources and strengthening its energy independence.
