Mongolian police have reported a surge in illegal mining activity, particularly in Selenge province’s Yeroo soum. Following directives from the Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice and Internal Affairs, authorities conducted intensified monitoring of mining license holders and focused on preventing environmental crimes during the holiday period. Investigations in Selenge, Tuv, and Bulgan aimags revealed 15 illegal mining operations in Yeroo soum and Bugant village. These violations include exceeding licensed mining areas, illegal extraction under the guise of land rehabilitation, and unlicensed individuals utilizing machinery for unlawful resource extraction. Approximately 70% of environmental crimes investigated involve illegal mining, highlighting a significant issue of resource mismanagement in the region. The crackdown continues with ongoing monitoring across the country.
