A famed pine tree in the Koli National Park in Finland, long considered a national landscape icon, has officially been declared dead. However, investigations reveal the tree actually died approximately 20 years ago, gradually transforming into “kelo” – standing deadwood – over time. Determining the precise date of death proved difficult due to the slow process of decay. The tree’s deterioration was visually apparent, but confirming its complete demise required further assessment. Koli National Park officials made the formal announcement, acknowledging the tree’s symbolic importance despite its condition. The tree will remain in place as a natural part of the forest ecosystem, continuing to provide habitat for various species.
