The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Hibatullah Akhundzada, the supreme leader of the Taliban, and Abdul Hakim Haqqani, the chief justice of the Afghan judicial system, according to Reuters. The court has also issued an arrest warrant for the Taliban’s minister of education, reported by AFP. The charges relate to crimes against humanity stemming from the persecution of Afghan girls and women. ICC member states are obligated to arrest individuals for whom arrest warrants have been issued. This move signifies a heightened international effort to address alleged human rights abuses committed under Taliban rule in Afghanistan. The warrants represent a direct challenge to the current Taliban leadership and their policies. Further action by ICC member states will be closely watched.
