British driver Andy Green, famed for being the first to break the sound barrier on land, has set a new speed record for a hydrogen-powered vehicle. Driving a JCB-built car powered by two modified hydrogen combustion engines, Green achieved an average speed of 653.9 kilometers per hour on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. He reached 645 km/h on the first run and 663 km/h on the return, averaging the two for the record. This new record, confirmed by the FIA, significantly surpasses the previous hydrogen car speed record of 299 km/h set in 2004 and even exceeds his own diesel-powered car record of 563 km/h from 2006. Green believes the vehicle had more speed potential, reaching over 674 km/h during one run but easing off before the finish. While impressive, this record remains below his overall land speed record of 1228 km/h set in 1997 with the Thrust SSC.
