A newly constructed kayak and canoe academy, built on the shores of Lake Velence at a cost of over 50 billion forints, will not be able to host the upcoming World Championships as planned. The event’s relocation is due to unusually low water levels in the lake, rendering the venue unsuitable for competition. Consequently, the August university kayak-canoe world championships will now be held in Szeged instead. The academy’s construction was recently completed, raising questions about the initial site selection process. Officials have not yet commented on potential solutions to address the water level issue for future events. This shift represents a logistical challenge for organizers and a disappointment for the Velence region, which anticipated economic benefits from hosting the championships. The move to Szeged ensures the event can proceed as scheduled, albeit at a different location.
