Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar plans to nominate Judit Polgár, widely considered the greatest female chess player of all time, as the country’s next president. Magyar announced the intention on Facebook, stating Polgár embodies talent and perseverance and can unite the nation. He will discuss the position with Polgár on Monday, intending for her to serve until a new constitution is adopted. The nomination comes after Tamás Sulyok’s recent resignation, triggered by a constitutional amendment cutting short his presidency; Sulyok was an ally of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Magyar’s party, Tisza, holds a two-thirds majority in parliament, suggesting Polgár’s approval is likely. Polgár, a former child prodigy and long-time world number one, retired from competitive chess over a decade ago but remains involved in the sport and has never held political office.
