Following a significant influx of approximately 72,000 migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa, hundreds remain–and identified as minors. The situation arose after a surge in migration, prompting a complex humanitarian and logistical challenge for Spanish authorities. Determining the age and origins of these unaccompanied minors is proving difficult, hindering efforts to provide appropriate care and facilitate family reunification. Many migrants exploited a lapse in border controls, taking advantage of eased Moroccan security. Ceuta is now grappling with providing shelter, food, and legal assistance to this vulnerable population. The Spanish government is currently working with Moroccan authorities to address the root causes of migration and prevent future occurrences, while also assessing long-term solutions for the minors currently in their care.
