A housekeeper in Senegal is facing trial after allegedly stealing approximately $16,000 worth of gold jewelry from her employer. The theft was discovered in June when the employer’s sister requested jewelry for a family event and found the collection significantly diminished. Initially, both women searched for the missing items, with the housekeeper even offering to have a bag of jewelry she’d received checked. However, the employer identified two of her own earrings within the bag. Despite initially claiming the jewelry was inexpensive imitation gold, the housekeeper confessed to the theft after a jeweler confirmed its authenticity. The stolen jewelry was reportedly sold for a fraction of its value – around $650 – to a street vendor. The case highlights a breach of trust between the employer and employee following a period of close working relationship.
