Suicide rates among children and teenagers in Hong Kong reached a ten-year high in 2025, according to data released by Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong (SBHK). Despite this alarming increase within the youth demographic, the overall suicide figures for Hong Kong saw a decline. SBHK highlighted the urgent need for the government to bolster existing suicide prevention programs specifically tailored for students. The NGO presented these findings at a press conference on Thursday, emphasizing the critical situation facing young people. The total number of suicide cases recorded in 2025 was 1,019. SBHK urges immediate action to address the factors contributing to the rising rates of youth suicide and improve mental health support systems. This calls for a focused and expanded approach to student wellbeing.
