Hamas announced the dissolution of its governing body in the Gaza Strip after nearly two decades in power, signaling a significant political shift. This move aims to facilitate a transition to civilian rule through a technocratic committee, the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG). The decision follows a ceasefire with Israel last October and repeated statements from Hamas expressing willingness to relinquish day-to-day governance. However, the crucial issue of Hamas’s disarmament remains unresolved. The dissolution was initiated with the resignation of the head of the government’s emergency committee, Mohammed al-Farra. Hamas hopes this step will remove Israeli justifications for continued aggression and ensure the NCAG's success, led by Palestinian technocrat Ali Shaath. Other Palestinian factions reportedly welcomed the decision as a positive step towards unified governance.
