Guatemala’s National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) has issued warnings regarding saturated soil in 12 departamentos, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides. The National Coordination for Disaster Reduction (Conred) reports 2,184 emergencies have occurred during the current rainy season. The alerts come as the country grapples with the aftermath of intense rainfall. Tragically, these weather events have resulted in 22 fatalities across Guatemala. Insivumeh’s warnings highlight the potential for further disasters due to the already saturated ground. Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and heed evacuation orders to mitigate potential risks. The ongoing heavy rains continue to pose a significant threat to communities throughout the country.
