Guatemala has evacuated approximately 250 people as the Fuego volcano, one of Central America’s most active, erupted on Monday. Two villages near the volcano have been emptied, and a highway has been temporarily closed due to the ongoing activity. Authorities have raised the alert level as the eruption intensifies, with the possibility of further evacuations if conditions worsen. The Fuego volcano, meaning “fire” in Spanish, is located 40 kilometers southwest of Guatemala City and 16 kilometers from the popular tourist destination of Antigua. While the volcano typically experiences daily small eruptions, the current event involves a significant lava flow stretching hundreds of meters. The situation, while serious, is less catastrophic than the devastating 2018 eruption which caused hundreds of deaths and impacted 1.7 million people.
