A vandalized escalator at Groningen train station will remain out of service for at least six months following damage caused during King’s Night celebrations. An unknown individual pushed a cherry picker off the escalator, causing significant damage requiring a complete drive system replacement. ProRail, the rail infrastructure manager, initially hoped for a quicker repair, but the specialized drive system needs to be manufactured, with a lead time of 26 weeks. The total cost of repairs is estimated at a quarter of a million euros, though recovering these costs from the perpetrators is deemed unlikely due to a lack of security footage. Passengers will rely on stairs and working lifts to access the pedestrian tunnel until February 2027. ProRail has filed a police report regarding the incident.
