Greece is initiating a program to control the spread of invasive pufferfish, known locally as lagokephalos, by financially incentivizing fishermen to catch them. The Ministry of Rural Development and Food will soon issue a call for proposals, outlining details of the bounty system. Fishermen will receive a payment of six euros per kilogram of pufferfish caught. The initial phase of the initiative will focus on the South Aegean region and the island of Crete. This pilot program aims to reduce the population of the invasive species and mitigate its impact on the local marine ecosystem. Further expansion of the program may follow based on the success of this initial rollout.
