Galicia’s electoral roll for residents abroad has surpassed 513,000 registered voters, largely due to the “grandchild law” which added 40,000 new electors. This law facilitates voter registration for descendants of Spanish citizens living abroad. The region of Galicia places a significantly higher importance on the expatriate vote compared to other autonomous communities in Spain. This increase directly impacts the Partido Popular (PP), which traditionally relies heavily on support from emigrants in Galicia. The Partido Popular considers Galicia its main stronghold among voters residing outside of Spain. The bolstered expat voter base could prove crucial in upcoming elections within Galicia. This surge reflects a growing political engagement among the diaspora.
