Raphaël Glucksmann has been decisively chosen as the French left’s candidate for the presidential election, securing 66% of the vote in the first round on Sunday evening. This victory firmly positions him as the representative of the social-democratic wing of the French left. Olivier Faure, the First Secretary of the Parti Socialiste (PS), trailed significantly behind with 14% of the vote. Other contenders, including Ségolène Royal, Jérôme Guedj, and Emmanuel Maurel, each received less than 10% of the votes cast. Glucksmann has pledged to unite the left in an effort to defeat the far-right, reiterating his opposition to forming alliances with La France Insoumise (LFI). The results indicate a clear preference among voters for a more moderate and unified approach to challenging both the current government and extremist parties in France. He intends to “gather” the left to achieve this goal.
