Gilgit-Baltistan will auction hunting permits for three markhor, 14 blue sheep, and 100 ibexes as part of its 2026-27 trophy hunting program. The permits, auctioned September 10th, carry base rates of $200,000 for markhor, $25,000 for blue sheep, and $11,000 for ibex. Proceeds from the auctions fund conservation efforts, determined by wildlife expert surveys. Last year’s auction fell short of its revenue target due to unused permits and cancellations linked to regional unrest. Local businesses are protesting rising permit costs, fearing negative impacts on tourism and local economies reliant on hunting revenue. Hunting will be restricted to designated conservation areas between October 15th and April 10th, 2027, adhering to the GB Trophy Hunting Guidelines 2019.
