Ghanaian biodiversity is facing a critical threat from factors including illegal mining, deforestation, land degradation, and climate change. These pressures are leading to a significant loss of plant genetic resources, jeopardizing food security and the stability of ecosystems. Scientists at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Plant Genetic Resources Research Institute (CSIR-PGRRI) are actively working to conserve seeds as a vital safeguard. This preservation effort aims to protect future livelihoods dependent on these plant resources. The loss of biodiversity impacts the resilience of Ghana’s natural environment and its ability to adapt to ongoing environmental changes. The seed-saving initiative represents a crucial step in mitigating the long-term consequences of this ecological crisis.
