The General Secretary of Ghana’s Convention People’s Party (CPP), Harold Stephen Ato Eshun, has issued a stark warning about the increasing role of money in Ghanaian politics, asserting it threatens the nation’s democratic foundations. Speaking at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference, Eshun argued that the monetization of politics could disenfranchise ordinary Ghanaians, prioritizing wealth over competence. He specifically condemned vote buying as a “dangerous culture” eroding the integrity of elections in Ghana. Eshun emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue, stating Ghana’s democracy is “under severe threat”. The CPP official believes that financial resources are becoming a defining factor in selecting political leaders, rather than merit or public service. His comments call for a renewed focus on safeguarding the democratic process in Ghana against the corrupting influence of money.
