A Ghanaian PhD student at Texas Tech University is advocating for enhanced legal safeguards for individuals contributing to the growth of artificial intelligence. Jeffery Acheampong Adu presented research at the AEJMC Conference highlighting the vulnerability of AI data workers. His study, “Data Workers in the AI Supply Chain,” investigates existing legal and policy frameworks at global, African regional, and Ugandan levels. The research assesses how these frameworks currently recognize and protect those whose work powers AI development. Adu’s findings suggest a significant gap in protections for these workers. He argues stronger regulations are needed to ensure fair treatment and rights within the AI supply chain, particularly in Africa. This call for protection aims to address the ethical considerations surrounding AI’s reliance on often-unprotected digital labor.
