Ghana’s Interior Ministry has implemented significant changes to its firearm licensing process, aiming to enhance public safety and address existing loopholes. The reforms, announced by Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, now mandate mental health assessments and drug screenings for all applicants. Prospective gun owners will also be required to complete structured training programs. Minister Mubarak highlighted deficiencies in the previous system, which allowed licenses to be granted without adequate evaluation of an applicant’s psychological state or firearms proficiency. These changes represent a substantial overhaul of the country’s gun control measures. The Ministry anticipates the new regulations will reduce gun-related incidents and improve overall security. The reforms were detailed during an appearance on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show.
