Following a deadly avalanche on Broad Peak that claimed the lives of ten mountaineers and a series of climbing accidents resulting in thirteen fatalities this year, the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan has formed a three-member committee. The committee is tasked with a comprehensive review of the 1999 Trekking Rules and Regulations, including procedures, terms, and standard operating procedures. They will investigate potential negligence and administrative failings in rescue operations, specifically regarding the Broad Peak incident and the recent death of Pakistani climber Asma Mushtaq on Spantik Peak. Led by Forest Secretary Subtain Ahmed, the committee will analyze existing regulations clause-by-clause, identifying outdated or incomplete provisions. The Chief Minister emphasized the need to ensure the safety of all involved in mountaineering activities, including climbers, guides, and porters. Complaints of negligence have already been brought to the attention of the CM, indicating a broader concern over safety protocols in the region.
