Dutch grid operator Stedin is installing gas generators near the Strijkviertel district in Utrecht to alleviate severe strain on the local power grid. The move comes as the region faces a complete connection halt for new and larger power demands, with customers placed on a waiting list. The grid is experiencing “congestion,” meaning sufficient power exists but transmission capacity is limited, akin to a traffic jam. While nationwide issues exist, Utrecht and East Brabant are particularly affected. Stedin considers this a difficult but necessary measure, as the existing grid is at capacity, especially during peak winter usage. The generators will provide localized electricity, helping to stabilize supply during high-demand periods. They will primarily operate on only a few days per year when the grid is most stressed.
