The ‘Visarjan Se Vidya Tak’ project in Maharashtra, India is ingeniously converting waste from Ganesha idol immersions into useful study tables for schools. Initiated by Malhar Kaalambe and Dr. Binish Desai, the project has successfully repurposed 3,000 kg of Plaster of Paris from discarded idols. This innovative approach tackles waste management issues connected with the Ganesh festival while simultaneously addressing needs within the educational sector. The repurposed material is being used to create essential furniture for learning institutions, improving the environment for students. Currently, the initiative aims to produce 5,000 tables and additional educational resources by 2026. ‘Visarjan Se Vidya Tak’ exemplifies a circular economy model, merging cultural tradition with environmental responsibility and educational support in Maharashtra.
