Right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori is projected to win Peru’s presidential election, narrowly defeating her leftist rival, Roberto Sánchez. With over 99% of votes tallied, Fujimori leads by approximately 43,300 votes, a margin Sánchez is unlikely to overcome with roughly 40,000 votes remaining to be counted. The election was delayed due to the late arrival and counting of overseas ballots, resulting in a closely contested race. Sánchez has alleged voter fraud, particularly concerning ballots from abroad, and has refused to recognize Fujimori’s government, calling for protests. Peru’s electoral commission denies the fraud claims and will officially declare the winner in mid-July. Fujimori’s victory continues a rightward shift in Latin American politics, following similar trends in Colombia. She is the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, who was previously imprisoned for human rights abuses.
