Laos, once famed as "The Land of a Million Elephants", now struggles to protect its remaining 800 elephants from extinction due to habitat loss and exploitation. A Frenchwoman is actively working to combat this crisis by purchasing elephants from owners who subject them to abuse. Her mission focuses on providing ageing elephants with a safe and dignified new life, away from harmful conditions. This effort highlights the urgent need for conservation and improved animal welfare standards within Laos. FRANCE 24’s Andrew Hilliar and France 2 colleagues documented this important rescue work. The initiative addresses the critical decline of the elephant population and offers a glimmer of hope for the species’ future within the region.
