The French parliament is set to approve a landmark bill banning social media access for children under 15. President Emmanuel Macron has promoted this measure as a key reform, with the Senate overwhelmingly voting in favor of the law. France will become the first European nation to implement such a digital age limit to combat the harmful effects of apps like TikTok. The ban will be executed in two phases, starting with a prohibition on new accounts for under-15s on September 1. Existing accounts for this age group will be closed by January 2027. Digital Minister Anne Le Henanff stated that the timeline is feasible due to existing age-verification tools. Furthermore, the legislation aligns with a separate ban on mobile phones in high schools starting this school year. This move follows health warnings regarding the impact of social media on adolescent mental health.
