An estimated 139,000 women in France are living with the consequences of female genital mutilation (FGM), also known as excision. While the practice is illegal within France, young girls remain vulnerable to FGM when traveling to their parents’ countries of origin. Despite no active FGM practices being recorded within France itself, authorities recognize the continued risk posed by cross-border travel. This summer, the French government launched a public awareness campaign aimed at preventing these acts of violence. The campaign seeks to educate families and communities about the illegality and harmful effects of FGM. It also aims to provide support for victims and encourage reporting of suspected cases. The initiative underscores the ongoing challenges in eradicating this deeply rooted practice, even within a country where it is explicitly outlawed.
