Forum for Democracy (FVD) is replacing MP Lidewij de Vos, who is on maternity leave, with Iem al Biyati, the former chairman of the party’s youth wing. The decision follows a process involving the Electoral Council, which initially designated party leader Thierry Baudet as the substitute. However, Baudet declined the position, paving the way for Al Biyati to take the seat. Al Biyati was eleventh on the party list in the last election and previously led the JFVD, a youth movement frequently embroiled in controversy due to extremist messaging. This replacement marks the latest in a series of changes within the FVD parliamentary faction, following earlier departures of members in recent years. Al Biyati will be entering the Dutch Parliament for the first time, bringing with him the baggage of his past leadership role within the contentious youth organization. The appointment raises questions given the JFVD’s history of controversial views.
