Former Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu, known for his pro-Russia stance, was arrested today at his home near Bucharest. He is suspected of fraud and establishing a criminal organization, charges he denies. Georgescu was previously under judicial supervision awaiting a court decision but a recent appeal by the Public Prosecutor's Office overturned that ruling, leading to his 30-day detention. Hundreds of his supporters gathered outside the courthouse in the center of Bucharest following the arrest. Police conducted searches at five locations, including Georgescu's residence, as part of the investigation. Earlier in 2024, Georgescu surprisingly won the first round of the presidential elections amid allegations of Russian interference through a social media campaign, which ultimately led to the election results being annulled and his disqualification. He also faces charges related to a failed coup attempt and glorifying fascist leaders, all of which he refutes.
