South African jurist Navi Pillay has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her decades-long commitment to international criminal law and human rights. Pillay served as a judge at both the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, Tanzania. She notably held the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014, advocating globally for victims of abuse. The Nobel Committee recognized her relentless work in combating impunity and promoting justice for international crimes. Prior to her international roles, Pillay was the first Indian-South African woman to be admitted to the bar in Natal, South Africa, and actively fought against apartheid. The award acknowledges her lifelong dedication to protecting vulnerable populations and strengthening the international legal order.
