Thomas Lubanga, once a key ally of Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi, has become a rebel leader fighting against the DRC government. Initially tasked with negotiating the surrender of militias in the Ituri province in 2020, Lubanga was later held hostage by those same groups. Despite receiving support from Kinshasa for his re-election in 2023, the relationship deteriorated in 2024, leading Lubanga to establish a politico-military movement in Uganda. This new group has engaged in clashes with the DRC armed forces. Simultaneously, Lubanga has attempted to initiate negotiations with the government, but these efforts have so far been met with no official response. His journey reflects a complex shift from collaboration to conflict and ongoing attempts at dialogue.
