Commonly known as “forever chemicals,” PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are surprisingly widespread in everyday household items, ranging from cosmetics like mascara to furniture upholstery. These chemicals are exceptionally difficult to trace due to their presence in a vast array of products and complex supply chains. Despite growing health concerns linked to PFAS exposure, implementing complete bans proves challenging. The difficulty lies in identifying all sources and finding viable alternatives that maintain product functionality. Currently, regulations are struggling to keep pace with the continuous introduction of new PFAS compounds. This lack of comprehensive oversight allows these chemicals to persist in both products and the environment, creating ongoing public health risks. The issue highlights the need for increased transparency and stronger regulations to address the ubiquitous presence of these persistent pollutants.
