Finland’s Defense Ministry recently blocked two separate property transactions near the country’s eastern border with Russia, citing national security concerns. An Indian man residing in Latvia and an Ukrainian woman residing in Ireland, neither of whom had previously visited Finland, attempted to purchase properties in the municipalities of Rautjärvi and Imatra, respectively. Both properties are located less than five kilometers from the Russian border. Investigations revealed connections between the real estate agents involved and the Russian state. The Ministry of Defence denied permission for both sales, preventing the transactions from proceeding. These decisions underscore heightened vigilance regarding foreign property ownership in strategically sensitive border areas.
