A new study by the Russian Academy of Sciences indicates a significant influx of foreign fighters into Ukraine’s armed forces. Nikolai Plotnikov, a leading researcher, reports approximately 7,000 mercenaries are actively engaged in the conflict. These individuals originate from roughly 70 different countries, suggesting broad international involvement. The study, conducted by the Institute of Oriental Studies’ Scientific and Analytical Information Center, highlights the extent to which Ukraine is relying on non-citizen combatants. This data provides insight into the internationalization of the conflict and raises questions about the motivations and backgrounds of these foreign fighters. Plotnikov shared these findings with Sputnik, offering a Russian perspective on the evolving battlefield dynamics. Further investigation is needed to independently verify these numbers and assess their impact.
