Portugal’s basic food basket cost increased in June, rising to €257.68, reversing a recent trend of declining prices. Consumer advocacy group Deco Proteste identified significant price increases in several key items between June 10th and 17th. Cereal flakes saw the largest jump, increasing by 18%, followed by fresh horse mackerel (carapau) at 16%. Frisée lettuce prices also rose notably, increasing by 12% during the same period. This increase interrupts a period where the cost of essential food items had been gradually decreasing, impacting household budgets. Deco Proteste regularly monitors the prices of a representative basket of goods to track cost of living changes for Portuguese consumers. The report highlights ongoing volatility in food prices despite broader economic trends.
