The World Food Programme (WFP) announced it is halting food aid to half a million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip due to a lack of funding, according to AFP. This reduction will leave approximately 1.1 million Palestinians receiving monthly assistance – still around half of Gaza’s population – but significantly fewer than before. The UN agency warns that the local population in Gaza continues to have immense humanitarian needs despite these cuts. This situation follows a previous decision by the WFP to halve food aid to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, also due to insufficient funding. The double blow exacerbates the existing food insecurity and hardship faced by Palestinians in both Gaza and the occupied West Bank. The WFP’s ability to provide critical support has been severely hampered by ongoing financial constraints. This situation underscores the urgent need for increased international assistance to address the growing humanitarian crisis.
