A hunting association in Flanders is requesting permission to hunt wild boar with bows and arrows. The Hubertus Vereniging Vlaanderen believes that bow hunting is a suitable method for controlling the wild boar population which is causing disturbances. Current control measures include driven hunts across the region, where hunters attempt to drive the animals towards designated shooting locations. Wild boar are increasingly entering residential areas in towns such as Beringen and Houthalen-Helchteren, damaging gardens due to food scarcity in the forests. While Belgium previously approved hunting with silencers and night vision equipment, it hasn’t yet been officially ratified. Hunters argue that bow hunting is less disruptive and safer in residential areas than using firearms, citing successful implementation in Spanish cities like Madrid and Alicante. The Flemish minister is considering the proposal, pending expert opinions.
