The Finnish Automotive Federation (Autoliitto) has strongly criticized proposals from officials at the Ministry of Transport and Communications regarding congestion charges for major urban areas and linking vehicle taxation to road maintenance costs. According to Autoliitto’s CEO, Pasi Nieminen, Finland does not experience congestion comparable to international standards. The organization argues that these new taxes would increase financial burdens on both households and businesses, especially considering already high fuel prices. While acknowledging the importance of addressing Finland’s road repair backlog, Autoliitto believes prioritization of funding—rather than additional taxes—is the appropriate solution. The association contends that the ministry’s proposals are out of touch with reality and would negatively impact the Finnish economy. They advocate for a more sensible approach to road funding.
