Finnish transmission system operator Fingrid will sever a fiber optic connection running to Russia, according to reports from both Russian newspaper Kommersant and Finnish outlet Iltalehti. The connection had previously been leased to a telecommunications operator but will soon be decommissioned. This fiber optic cable was initially part of a power line connecting Finland and Russia. Following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, electricity imports via this line ceased and the connection was physically severed. Fingrid confirmed the decision, citing the changed geopolitical landscape as the reason for disconnecting the remaining fiber optic component. The move signals a further reduction in infrastructure links between the two countries.
