Fertilizer markets in Joypurhat and Meherpur, Bangladesh are experiencing significant instability during the current Aman season. Despite adequate supply in Joypurhat, unscrupulous traders are reportedly charging 500-600 taka more per bag than the government-fixed price. In Meherpur, a severe shortage of TSP fertilizer has emerged, leading to a black market controlled by local syndicates. These syndicates are selling fertilizer at arbitrarily inflated prices without requiring receipts. This price increase threatens agricultural production, potentially impacting farmers’ livelihoods and food security. Authorities have yet to take decisive action to curb the illicit practices and ensure fertilizer availability at the designated rates. The situation highlights issues with market monitoring and regulation in the agricultural sector.
